When an employee has submitted his or her checkout request to ESP, the specimen must be retrieved and the checkout confirmed. When the specimen is in the walk-in refrigerator or a standalone refrigerator or freezer, checkout is confirmed by closing a batch of checkout requests, whether or not the employee physically retrieves the specimen. For specimens stored in the AS/RS freezer, however, the process is different. Retrieve and Confirm Software (RACS) is used to actually confirm that the specimen was retrieved by the requesting employee. RACS is used to confirm checkouts both when tubes are picked by the Motoman AS/RS Sorter and retrieved by employees in plastic racks and when tubes or bottles are manually retrieved from trays on the AS/RS outbound conveyor. In the case of the latter the bar code on each tube or bottle is read at the RACS Tray Retrieval Station. In the former case, where confirmation occurs at the RACS Rack Retrieval Station, only the bar code on the plastic rack needs to be read.
If trays stored in the AS/RS freezer are eligible to be discarded and are requested for discard in ESP Storage, RACS is used to request the trays out of the freezer and then confirm the discard of the trays and all specimens in the trays.
