Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Collect specimen after delivery.

Collect: Lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), green (sodium or lithium heparin), or yellow (ACD Solution A).

Specimen Preparation: Do not freeze. Transport 5 mL whole blood. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Remarks:

Unacceptable Conditions: Separator or gel tubes. Frozen specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Note: The Fetal Screen is a qualitative screening test designed to detect larger than expected fetal-maternal hemorrhage in maternal specimens collected following delivery.  If positive, a quantitative test (Kleihauer-Betke) must be used to determine the extent of fetal-maternal hemorrhage and the dosage of Rh immune globulin required.
