Specimen Preparation: Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen.

Unacceptable Conditions: EDTA plasma.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 3 months

Prolactin
 Male Female
1-9 years 2.1-17.7 ng/mL 2.1-17.7 ng/mL
10 years and older 2.1-17.7 ng/mL 2.8-26.0 ng/mL
 Monomeric Prolactin

Age Male Female
1-9 years 2.1-13.3 ng/mL 2.1-13.3 ng/mL
10 years and older 2.1-13.3 ng/mL 2.8-19.5 ng/mL
Monomeric Prolactin Percent Greater than 50%

Interpretive Data: If the % Monomeric Prolactin is 40-50%, then the result is indeterminate for macroprolactin.  If the % Monomeric Prolactin is less than 40%, then this indicates the presence of macroprolactin.  A Monomeric Prolactin result above the upper reference limit is consistent with hyperprolactinemia.

Monomeric Prolactin was determined by PEG precipitation.  Macroprolactin is precipitated by PEG and is not measured.
CPT Code(s): 84146 x2
