Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Carbapenem Resistance : 2001503

Mnemonic: MA KPC

Methodology: Disk Diffusion
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-2 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Actively growing Enterobacteriaceae species in pure culture.

Specimen Preparation: Transport sealed container with pure culture on agar slant or in bacterial transport media. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Room temperature.

Remarks: Isolate identification required.

Unacceptable Conditions: Mixed cultures or non-viable organisms.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval:
Negative
Interpretive Data: The clinical efficacy of the carbapenems has not been established for treating infections caused by Enterobacteriaceae that test as carbapenem susceptible (CLSI M100-S20 MIC breakpoints: ertapenem less than or equal to 2 µg/mL, imipenem less than or equal to 4 µg/mL, and/or meropenem less than or equal to 4 µg/mL) but demonstrate carbapenemase production in vitro.
Note: An additional handling fee will be billed for all organisms submitted that are not in pure culture as indicated in the specimen requirements.
CPT Code(s): 87184
